Being a high school teacher for 28 years, my mom has a lot to say on education and its importance. If I will write everything she taught me, It would take a year for me to finish. I don’t even remember most of it. However, there are three things that I find valuable in my mom’s wisdom that I would like to instill in my own child as he grows up. That is that intelligence will always remain beautiful, Hard-work should always be present in everything you do and the value of community in our lives.
We are all girls in the family. As such, my mom would always tells us her favorite motto : “Beauty is useless if the brain is empty”. I’ve learned that intelligence will remain beautiful thus, I make sure that my son’s education is the number one priority. We are currently establishing his studying habits and I make sure that he does his homework alone. I sit down with him but he knows I am only there to guide and assist him. I allow him to learn on his own so he’ll learn how to be resourceful, independent and self-sufficient. Even though my mom is a teacher, she never spoon fed the answers to me. I also make sure he develop love for learning and reading books. I do interactive learning with my son and I use animated voices whenever I read to him. My son is too young to force the importance of education so I try to make it fun for him.
Hard-work is another shared value that my mom instilled in me. When I want something, I work hard for it. I remember my mom used to tell me not to rely on my “stock knowledge” as it is bound to ran out. If you want to excel in something, you should study hard for it.
When my son wants something, he gets it because he deserves it. Right now, he is his school’s representative in an upcoming quiz bee competition and he works hard by studying and attending additional review classes during his free time.
We place great value not only on academics but also on community and social activities. My mom believed that life is not just about learning how to read and write. They are imperative but just as important are morals and friendship. Being an achiever is nothing if
everyone hates and does not want to be with you. Also, extracurricular activities develop the skills that most employers are looking for when they graduate. The community can help foster a well rounded, team player and socially skilled individual. I am
incorporating this to my son by encouraging him to join various after-school organizations and helping him take interest in sports.
Lastly, we must not forget the importance of a balanced diet in our kids. It is essential that they are receiving essential vitamins, minerals and nutritional food that they need to stay healthy and smart.
My mother would always prepare a glass of milk specifically California Milk when I wake up and just before I go to bed.
My son is not a fan of “heavy breakfast” so I supplement milk to give him the nutrients he needs for the day. We practice “lead by example” in our household so every one in our family drinks milk at least once a day. It is an excellent source of protein and calcium that are both vital in my child’s growth and development.
